There are a couple of requirements to be aware of - you should have public liability insurance before going metal detecting. This sounds like it would be a major undertaking but it really isn't. The National Metal Detecting Council (NMDC for short) offers this as a membership benefit for only £8 a year. They also advocate for the interests of Metal Detectorists. Detectorists in the UK have a lot more liberty in where they can detect with a land owners permission. In many parts of Europe, detecting is banned or at least heavily restricted.
